You simply type a keyword in there and search. It generates keyword ideas based on the word but most importantly you can see the global and local search volume. This tells you how much other people are using Google to search for your keyword and the generated keywords. I'd say this is the number one keyword tool for ranking up in Google because the data comes straight from Google's search engine statistics.
Another cool keyword tool that is kind of fun is Google's Wonder Wheel. Simply do a Google search. On the left you click on "Wonder Wheel" and a wheel appears with keyword ideas related to your search term. You can click on each generated idea for more ideas. This is just a fun way to find those keywords so you can get started with a successful search-engine-optimized web site.
